Old Bear Press is formed by a group of three artists, Heather Chou, Deborah Stevenson, and Kathryn Poole, who share a common passion for fine art printmaking and bookbinding. With diverse styles and fields of interest ranging from acutely observed natural history illustration through digitally manipulated still life to contemporary oriental subjects, the artists’ work collectively tends towards a quiet aesthetic, each favouring a monochrome or muted palette. The group remains faithful to the hand crafted and traditional, producing unique prints and artists books in small editions.
Heather’s practice explores the conflicting notions of home, culture and identity with a particular focus on the sensations of displacement and nostalgia. Her practice centres on combining artist’s books with lithography using digital and hand drawn images from the disparate places she has known as home.

Recently embarked on a course of study in fine art printmaking with bookbinding, Deborah is working towards a Masters’ Degree at the University of Central Lancashire. Early art history studies involved Deborah in curatorial work with provincial art galleries and museums in Lancashire.
Kathryn has a background in human biology and is interested in natural history and the history of science. She uses observational drawings, printmaking and bookbinding to explore the collections of museums and tries to use the format of the book to reflect the structure of the specimens she studies.
